I have not worked with ASTER data at all, but I was quite impressed with the high resolution ASTER images of one of the California fires taken last Sunday and posted on the NASA Earth Observatory site. Click on the high resolution links to really see the detail. ASTER is a thermal satellite located on the same Terra platform with one of the MODIS sensors. ASTER has fine spatial resolution (15-90 m) but only images any particular area about every 16 days.
