I suspect the MODIS AOD product would not even show the thin smoke plumes, since it has a 10 km resolution compared to GASP's 4 km resolution. For air quality applications, GASP has an advantage over MODIS in both temporal resolution (hourly vs daily) and spatial resolution (4 km vs 10 km). MODIS AOD has much more conservative screening, thus the data is less noisy and more useful right now for quantitative analysis than GASP. But, both MODIS and GASP AOD products need the MODIS fine resolution true color imagery to confirm what is really happening.
