Kamonayi [July 22] and I [July 23 & July 24] made posts earlier this week that discussed Sahara dust transport across the Atlantic. We believe that this dust possibily affected southern Florida. Below is a hosted post from Dr. Sergio De Souza-Machado of the UMBC Atmospheric Spectroscopy Group. Dr. De Souza-Machado discusses the detection of the Sahara dust with AIRS.
"We were able to track the major dust storm this past week using data from the AIRS instrument. A quicktime movie and description are available on http://airs.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/image_releases/2005/sahara_dust_cloud.html. The detected dust peters out after about July 24 because the dust detection scheme cannot peer through water or ice clouds that are over the dust."
