Possible Asian Dust

Scott Bachmeier (UW IDEA), Nikisa and Jill have been tracking what looks to be Asian dust on this blog and on the UW IDEA site for the last couple of days. We have another source of AOD data....AERONET.

The left panel shows AOD at Egbert, Ontario, on April 15, the right panel Baltimore, MD. Both panels show elevated AODs. Interestingly for the Egbert data, the AOD is nearly constant with wavelength. While the AOD Level 2 processing giving aerosol size distribution doesn't seem to be up yet, by inspection, you can tell that the Angstrom coefficient is small (<1) meaning that we have big particles. This is consistent with dust. Baltimore is not as uniform in the AOD meaning smaller particles.

Thanks to Norm O'Neill (U. Sherbrooke) and MSC for the Egbert data and Brent Holben and the AERONET group at GSFC for the Baltimore data.

We'll be examining more sources of information over the next couple of days. Stay tuned.
