High fine particle concentrations continue in midwest

The midwest continued to experience very poor air quality today, with PM concentrations reaching unhealthy levels in Wisconsin (e.g., fine PM was over 50 ug/m3 in Madison) and Michigan (e.g., fine PM was 48 ug/m3 in Traverse City) and moderate air quality throughout the entire midwest. The MODIS Aqua image reveals partly cloudy skies, but if you look carefully (click on the image to see it at full size), the haze can be seen between the clouds (for example, in southern Minnesota). There are also the smoky wispy contrails that are often present under hazy conditions.
