Haze off the coast of California

While fine particle concentrations in the U.S. were good, a significant amount of haze continued to build over the Pacific off the coast of California, particularly near the central part of the state. Below are the MODIS Aqua true color image and the GOES-West aerosol product, both showing the haze distinctly (today's MODIS AOD from the IDEA site shows the haze well too). The simplest explanation is that this relates to the significant air pollution in California on December 7 and December 8. However, the HYSPLIT back trajectories indicate the air mass came from the west--long distance transport?
