smoke in the south, snow in the north

Several smoke plumes were detected in the south and in the Carolinas. The plumes are visible on MODIS Direct and HMS images. Even thought the IDEA map does not show elevated AOD in the south, it is possible to see slightly higher AOD in NC and SC.

The northern US is covered by snow, which creats a background too bright for AOD retrieval (see MODIS Direct image). The air quality remains moderate in central California and in the northwest (see EPA AirNow map).
