Fires across the south

Spring is arriving with blustery winds in the midwest and east, and fires in the south. In addition to some haze moving off the northeast coast, MODIS Terra shows clear skies in the south but many small smoke plumes from Texas to Florida (images from Rapidfire).

The GOES aerosol optical depth product showed elevated AOD, though some of that may be caused by surface changes that occur in the spring (especially around the Mississippi River); MODIS missed the aerosols for the most part. The folks at the NOAA Hazard Mapping System identified even more fires and smoke plumes, including a lot in Arkansas where Ray spotted those nearly invisible contrails.
