Hazy conditions continued in the eastern U.S. today, as summer unofficially begins this Memorial Day weekend. Georgia and Tennessee had intense smoke and high aerosol optical depth (MODIS). Fine particle concentrations (bottom left) were unhealthy in those states and moderate in the rest of the eastern U.S. Bottom right is a MODIS image of Virginia, DC, and Maryland showing the clouds and haze this afternoon, including the streaky clouds often seen in the presence of elevated particles.

A fire came up this afternoon in southcentral Alaska, producing quite a bit of smoke in the valleys. Something to keep an eye on as the western summer fire season will also begin soon.
