Haze and smoke, east and west

The area east of the Mississippi River continued hazy today, from regional scale sulfate haze throughout the northeast and midwest to continued smoky haze in the southeast. Fine particle concentrations were moderate to unhealthy.

Further west, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico seem to have a large plume of dust and/or smoke, mixed in with streaky contrails and clouds. I am at a bit of a loss as to the source of this, but it persisted through both MODIS overpasses. The Haze Cam in El Paso (the nearest webcam to this event I could find) looked pretty hazy this evening.
