Smoke covers the western U.S.

The western U.S. is on fire and covered in smoke, sparked by an intense heat wave. The only way to show the extent of the smoke is to combine four images from RapidResponse, showing particularly intense smoke over California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Below the true color images is the MODIS aerosol optical depth image showing the extent of the smoke, and the AIRNow fine particle concentrations.

The haze in the northeast intensified into a dense plume off the coast of New Jersey. While the true color image shows considerable haze, I'm not sure the aerosol optical depth levels (see above) were really that high but are instead mixed up with some clouds.
