Smoke Continues….

Smoke remains over the Northwest (left image; source: UW MODIS Direct) and continues to drift eastward. AOD (right image; source: IDEA), reaching unity in some places, remains elevated over this region. Particulate matter monitors closest to this event reported moderate (code yellow conditions; 15.5<PM2.5<40.4).

(Smoke extends all the way down into Northern CO. Smoke is also visible over the Great lakes region, which is likely due to transport from Canada and U.S. NW fires)

Moderate AQI was also reported for California. Local pollution sources such as fires and vehicle emissions are likely contributing to these conditions.

Now about the East…

Particulate matter levels were mostly moderate over the Eastern half of the nation. Smoke from western fires may have moved into this region (refer to HMS product & text from the analyst). However, I suspect that regional haze, which is typical for this time of year, is primarily responsible for the moderate AQ levels in the East.
