Smoke and haze across the U.S.

Dense smoke and haze covered the eastern half of the U.S., a combination of smoke from fires in the north and west, with regional haze from anthropogenic sources intensifed by hot weather. The MODIS aerosol optical depth data (left) shows the extent of the event, including many areas with AOD in excess of 1.0. Fine particle concentrations were unhealthy in many locations (right). The MODIS true color images (below) show the haze and smoke across the U.S., including fires and smoke plumes continuing in Montana, Idaho, Oregon and other western states.
