Smoke across the midwest and midAtlantic, fire in California

Smoke continues to cover much of the eastern half of the U.S. today. A smoky haze can be seen across the whole midwest and midAtlantic, with a plume of smoke exiting North Carolina over the Atlantic Ocean. Montana and Idaho continue to produce smoke from large fires in those states.

The MODIS aerosol optical depth values were well in excess of 1.0 in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Montana (left). Also of note are the intense fires and dense smoke north of Los Angeles, California, which have been burning for many days. It may be the cause of some smoky haze and elevated AOD values over central California and Utah.
