A little smoke, dust, and ash

While air quality was mostly good across the U.S. today, there were a variety of interesting more localized events. The southern U.S. had some light smoky haze in the early part of the day, likely from many fires in the area.

A large dust storm covered parts of Baja California and southern California, as seen by MODIS both in the true color image (left) and aerosol optical depth data (right).

The volcano that Nikisa noted in Hawaii on February 28 is continuing to produce ash. MODIS shows a thermal hot spot in the northern part of the Big Island, and an ash plume off the northwest coast. According to the USGS, Mount Kilauea is very active today and recently. The OMI SO2 site does not yet have any data for March, but perhaps soon.
