Southern Smoke plumes and visible haze. Land is also greener

Skies are hazy over the Central U.S (left image). Smoke from local fires is likely contributing to the aerosol load. Smoke plumes are particularly visible in New Mexico and Texas (right image).

It’s evident that Spring is here. The surface appears much greener, which is really noticeable in the South (left image). I’m including the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) subset (right image) for this region (visible red dots indicate “hot spots” due to local fire events). Also, for comparison, I’m including the RGB and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images for February 9, 2008 (bottom images).

Lastly, the air quality (source: EPA AIRNow) is mostly moderate in Southern California and parts of the East; conditions are good everywhere else.
