Good to Moderate Air Quality & surface smoke

A low frontal system is pushing haze, which was lingering on the East coast, over the Atlantic. Thus, skies are mostly cloudy over much of the East and parts of the upper Midwest (see radar map – right image).

Air quality varies from good to moderate across the nation. Air quality (source: EPA AIRNow) is mostly moderate in California and along the East Coast. Code yellow (moderate PM2.5 concentrations) conditions are also reported around the Gulf coast area. Refer to the NOAA surface smoke map (left image); fires in Florida are probably significantly contributing to the smoke load in the region. On the right is the MODIS active fire map from NIFC. Also, smoke aerosols from Central America may be contributing to elevated particulate levels near the surface.
