Good Air Quality in Central California, Haze in the Southeast, and Smoke over the Atlantic
California enjoyed good air quality today (left image, UW MODIS Aqua RGB and EPA Airnow AQI) although air quality was moderate in the southern portion of the state. In the east (right image, UW MODIS Aqua RGB and EPA Airnow AQI) air quality was primarily in the moderate range in the Great Lakes region, and parts of the Mid-atlantic and Southeast. Some of the haze was visible in the RGBs over Virginia and the Carolinas, where the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was also moderately elevated (lower right, IDEA MODIS AOD). The haze over the ocean extending out in a conical shape off the coast of North California is due to fire smoke. See NOAA HMS analysis in the bottom left for more exact location.
