Fire in Hyde County, NC

Smoke from a significant fire in Hyde County North Carolina is drifting over the Atlantic (left - UW MODIS Today). Almost fourteen thousand acres have been consumed and lighting (intense storms moved through this region yesterday -6-4-08) is the cause. Refer to the USDA MODIS Active Fire mapping website for further information. Other smaller events not clearly visible in the satellite imagery have been reported by National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Also, refer to the NOAA HMS product (right) which displays the fire and smoke. Smoke may still be lingering over Canada as well.

The air quality is moderate in the Southeast, Great Lakes region, and Southern California.
