Big Day for Fires and Dust

Fires abound in California in the wake of thunderstorms which set off numerous lightning struck fires (left panel). The Evans Road fire in North Carolina is still going and still creating its own weather. The cloud streak from Evans Road is due to the fire.

In California, the fires have led to very high PM2.5 concentrations from the East Bay through the foothills above Sacramento. Levels exceeding 80 ug m-3 were seen today.

Finally, in the Caribbean, Ruben Delgado pointed out to me today that the Puerto Rican papers are reporting serious air pollution problems from Saharan Dust. It was to peak about Friday and the CALIPSO overpass on Friday clearly shows the dust at 17oN.
