With lower humidity and temperatures due to a Canadian air mass pushing south from the northwest, much of the east is enjoying nice weather and good air quality today ! See below (left) for a comparison of the NPS webcam photo I posted last Friday, August 1 over the Great Smoky Mountains National Park compared to today's (right) photo, we get to see a couple additional mountain ranges, so dust off those boots and go for a hike in the Appalachians this weekend ! Tomorrow at least air quality will be good in the mid-Atlantic.

Back to the west coast now, the MODIS Aqua RGB (UW MODIS Today) shows the location of the smoke plume advected from northern California into Oregon. The fire symbols are MODIS fire detects (provided by NOAA NWS).Click on AirNow link above earlier today to see the monitor PM2.5 AQI, one monitor in southern Oregon was in the orange, and later in the day code red, possibly due to the transported smoke.
