Northwesterly flow into Beijing and clear skies reign

It is a little early yet for the MODIS overpass in Beijing today (8/19/08) but yesterday's MODIS AQUA view shows what is coming. It looks like the organizers are going to get the good, clear weather that they've been waiting for.

The MODIS image on the left shows yesterday's (8/18/08) AQUA pass with the NOAA HYSPLIT trajectories arriving at Beijing showing air at 500 m (red), 1500 m (blue) and 3000m (green) with the markers every six hours backwards from the 0500UTC approximate overpass times that this image was created from. The spacing on the markers show that the air flow is good and the clear air to the northwest bodes well for Beijing.

The official Beijing Municipal Air Quality site is showing PM10 at 25 ug m-3 which would be in the good range in the United States.
