Smoke Continues over Southeast

A series of fires and associated smoke could be seen over several central states in an image produced by NOAA’s Fire Hazard Mapping System:

The MODIS Terra true color image showed a series of clouds with what appears to be the smoke interspersed within them. The AOD image, however, was less clear given that the clouds blocked out most of the information (AOD cannot be measured through clouds), and readings immediately around clouds is often unreliable as readings from the clouds may distort the nearby readings.

Across the country as a whole, hourly PM2.5 AQI readings from AirNow were Moderate across the Southeast, and mostly Good across the rest of the county. Much of the Mid-Atlantic and portions of the Midwest had Moderate ozone in the afternoon, although the readings did not advance to more severe conditions:
