We always hear about how models predict fewer deaths due to regulations to reduce air pollution. Well, I was intrigued to see that researchers from BYU have determined that cleaner air since 1980 has been responsible for 5 months (15%) of an increase of 2.7 years of the average American lifespan between 1980 and 2000. Scientific American has a good summary and the full article is published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
So, reading the Smog Blog (...and reducing your energy use, polluting less, and lobbying your local, state, and federal representatives for strict air quality controls...) will help you live longer!
