Cooler in CA and fires abate; Southern Texas still hit by smoke

The national picture has not changed significantly from yesterday. Smoke is still coming into Texas from Mexico. The US Aqua MODIS RGB shows that there are a few southern cities in the Moderate Air Quality range. MODIS fire counts show that there are a few more fires in the US today than last week. One is in Okaloosa County, Florida (right). It hasn't stopped people from being on the beach at 6:00 pm on this fine Mother's Day (below). They better enjoy it. The forecast is for rain for the next four days in the panhandle so this fire's day is numbered.

The fires in Mexico, Central and South America are numerous in the image of the MODIS fire counts. It looks like Latin America is burning up. In California (right image), the fire in Santa Barbara still registers on the MODIS fire count map, but fog over Santa Barbara is a good thing to get that fire under control.
