Smoke over the South
The smoke from the fires in the Southeast (first reported on June 19th, last Friday) could be observed today in the MODIS Terra true color image (top, left) over mainly Mississippi and Alabama but also over Arkansas and Louisiana. The AOD map from MODIS Terra is shown on the right-hand side presenting higher values of AOD over that same region due to the smoke.
On the bottom row the HMS fires map is presented on the left-hand side followed by the PM2.5 map from AIRNow. The air quality index in the Southeast remained moderate throughout the day while the rest of US experienced relatively good conditions. Ozone levels were ranging from good to moderate in Southern California, Wyoming, Ohio and Georgia.
