Yesterday Ruben pointed out haze along the Gulf states. Today is a different story; most of the lingering haze is gone from the region (UW MODIS Direct). Dense clouds are over most of the North-Central U.S. Air quality conditions varied from good to moderate across most of the nation (EPA AIRNow). Significant fires are present in California. The first fire, located in Trinity County, California (Northern California; 7 miles north of Denny), has consumed 100 acres of land. The second fire, located further South in Tuolumne County, CA (13 miles north of Yosemite Valley) has consumed 1,200 acres of land. Only 30% of this fire has been contained. Please refer to the USDA Forest Center, Remote Sensing Applications Center for further details on these fire events. Lighting is the cause for both fire events. Lastly, major fires still remain in Alaska; regions closest to the fire are “unhealthy” (see Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation - Division of Air Quality). The HMS team does a good job at identifying all fires and outlines the likely distribution of smoke.
Happy 4th of July!
