Strong light extinction in Arizona and hazy conditions over the Atlantic offshore from Georgia

Today's EPA AIRNow's PM2.5 map (top, left) shows "moderate" air conditions in a majority of the eastern US as well as in California. Ozone levels are also, at the most, "moderate" over those same regions.

The TERRA AOD map (top, right) shows strong light extinction values especially in Arizona. The fairly strong AOD values over the Atlantic, offshore from Georgia translate in visible hazy conditions on today's MODIS TERRA RGB image over the area (bottom, left).

The SSD fire team at NOAA and the HMS map (bottom, right) show some residual light smoke in the northern region of California and slowly drifting off to the East. This smoke plume may be too thin to be seen on the MODIS RGB image. In addition, the National Interagency Fire Center reports moderate wildland fire activity throughout the country. Four new large fires are recorded, one each in California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Huh? A volcanic plume from a hurricane? What's that all about?
