More on smoke in California

Air quality conditions are generally good across the country with the exception of California and parts of the Midwest, which has mostly moderate (code yellow) conditions (left image; EPA AIRNow). Smoke from fires in Los Angeles County continues to be the big story (right image; UW MODIS Direct). Smoke is clearly visible from space and appears to be quite dense over a significant portion of the area. Approximately 2,168 acres have been consumed and the fire is 85% contained (refer to the National Interagency Fire Center report). Stay linked to the blog for further discussion on this event.

Moderate air quality in the East is likely due to sulfates and nitrates. Also, smoke from fires in Canada and Alaska may also move into the Midwest again (see IDEA AOD below).
