Fires are still producing significant smoke in Oregon (left image; UW MODIS Direct). Some of this smoke has moved Eastward over the Midwest Central U.S. Air quality conditions (PM2.5) range from moderate (code yellow) to unhealthy (code red) near the fires (right image; EPA AIRNow). The air quality ranges from good to moderate in California. Meanwhile, the rest of the country has primarily good conditions.
The fires responsible for the dense smoke in the West are named Boze and Tumblebug complex. The Boze fire has already consumed more than 9,000 acres. The tumblebug fire is larger and has consumed more than 11,000 acres. It is estimated that both fires will be contained by October 15, 2009. For further fire statistics please visit the National Interagency Fire site and the Oregon department of forestry website.
