Light Smoke over Midwest. Air Quality Action Day in Arizona.

Light area of smoke extending along the Midwest, from Minnesota to Oklahoma is present in today's MODIS Terra "true color" image. No AOD products where available today from the IDEA site. The smoke is confined within the ground and the first 5 kilometers according CALIPSO's 532 nm elastic retrieval. The air quality ground monitors along this region indicate that Good AQI levels were recorded. EPA's Airnow new AQI animation indicates that Moderate levels were observed in Southern California, Utah and Louisiana. The animation combines PM2.5 and ozone AQI levels.

An Air Quality Action Day was forecasted for Phoenix, Arizona because of blowing dust may increase PM10 concentrations to Unhealthy levels, as wind gusts over 25 mph associated with the passage of a cold front are expected.
