International: Poor air quality adding to Japan's misery

Japan has been devastated by moving earth, inundating water, and out of control fires. Now add the air to their troubles, as plumes of air pollution cover the region including Japan, Korea, and China. The image on the left is the regional view from MODIS Terra overlaid with a 96 hour HYSPLIT back trajectory from Sendai, one of the areas most affected by the tsunami. The haze mass is regional, with the major source area likely industrial centers in Korea and China. The image on the right is a close-up of Japan, with the haze over the Sea of Japan particularly distinct. Also visible are small smoke plumes and sediment.
