Moderate air quality in Arkansas, North Dakota, and California

It was a relatively quiet day in terms of air quality today. Moderate levels of PM2.5 were observed in a few regions (more persistently in Arkansas and California), as can be seen in AIRNow AQI animation below. Southern California was the only region in the US that experienced code orange today.

HMS fire and smoke analysis shows many fire spots spread out over the South and Southeast (top, right). A patch of smoke was reported over the Gulf of Mexico, which was also observed by MODIS Aqua (bottom, left). AOD values were slightly higher over that region (bottom, right).

HMS team also reported fires in British Columbia, Canada but no smoke. In the AIRNow animation, however, we can see moderate to unhealthy levels of PM2.5 which could be related to the fires. Satellites could not observe smoke over BC most likely due to the prevailing cloud coverage over that region.
