Air Quality Action Day in Utah; Smoke east of the Carolinas; Homogeneous PBL over Baltimore

Another Air Quality Action Day was experienced in Utah. PM2.5 concentrations reached Code Red and Orange levels in several locations along the state as shown in the Airnow animation. Surface concentrations of PM2.5 (top right image) ranged from 20 to 180 ug/m3. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality - Air Monitoring Center issued restrictions such as, the operation wood/coal stoves or fireplaces, and reduced vehicle use. NOAA HMS reported the presence of remnant smoke (shown here in the bottom left image, NASA MODIS Aqua AOD) from fires east and over the coasts of North and South Carolina. Lidar observations at UMBC show a cloud capped boundary layer in the first hour of observation with planetary boundary layer that reached a max height of 1.5 km.
