International Features registered on early February:

Although the summit of Paluweh (also known as Rokatenda) is shrouded by clouds, evidence of a recent eruption is visible in this satellite image of the Indonesian volcanic island. After rumbling for months, Paluweh released an explosive eruption on February 2 and 3, 2013 (Bottome left).Gray ash covers the southern slopes of the peak in this natural-color image. A lighter gray swath running from the summit (shrouded by the plume) to the ocean traces the path of a volcanic landslide, likely the remnants of a pyroclastic flow. A new delta extends into the Flores Sea at the foot of the flow. To the northwest, airborne ash swirls around the island. Green vegetation appears relatively untouched, but ash has destroyed many of the island's crops, according to The Jakarta Globe (Courtesy: Earth Observatory)

Fires in Queensland, Australia (Courtesy: MODIS Web); Queensland fire authorities are on high alert these days as temperatures in the area continue to rise. Temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit have been plaguing the area for weeks. The high temperatures combined with dry conditions are the perfect mix for outbreaks of wildfires which is exactly what is taking place in Queensland and what the fire authorities are trying to keep under control. Several years of wet conditions in the area have created a surplus of natural fuel to start and keep those fires going. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS's thermal bands, are outlined in red (bottom right)
