Frigid Temperatures and Unhealthy PM2.5 AQI across Pacific Northwest

Code Yellow (Moderate), Code Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) and Code Red (Unhealthy) PM2.5 levels were experienced across the Pacific Northwest today. The Great Lakes, Southern Plain and Northeast states also experienced elevated PM2.5 conditions, peaking at Code Yellow (top left). Widespread high pressure (top right) contributed to clear skies and strong radiational cooling at sunset, allowing temperatures to drop below freezing for much of the Pacific Northwest by early evening (bottom left). Wood burning to combat the frigid temperatures combined with the subsidence-driven shallow planetary boundary layer may in part be responsible for the observed poor air quality conditions, as the NAAPS aerosol model forecasts slight indication of smoke in this area tomorrow (bottom right).
