Elevated PM2.5 and fire weather in Pacific Southwest

Elevated PM2.5 were observed again across the San Joaquin Valley and Salt Lake City, Utah, peaking at Code Red, Unhealthy, levels (top left). According to the HMS analysis team, few regions across the United States were impacted by fires and smoke plumes (top right). Despite few fires in the Pacific Southwest, fire weather potential was a concern near southern California's coastal mountains and foothills, forecast for "Elevated" today, due to critically low relative humidity values (5-15%), warm temperatures, and strong winds, sustained between 15-20mph (bottom). The surface high pressure system and pressure gradient driving strong offshore flow and such favorable fire weather conditions is forecast to weaken over the next few days, reducing the threat for fire ignition.
