Code Yellow to Orange AQI in California and the Eastern Half of the United States

Code Orange PM2.5 AQI levels were experienced in Pennsylvania, California and Connecticut. Northern Great Lakes, New England and Mid-Atlantic states experienced Code Yellow (Moderate AQI) PM2.5 concentrations, as light winds, warm air arriving aloft, and snow at the surface will combine to elevate particle concentrations. In the Southeastern states thin smoke could be seen along the coast of the Southeast
US. This smoke is likely from agricultural burning yesterday in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The MODIS RGB images captures several locations were agricultural burns are taking place.

The AOD images from MODIS AQUA shows elevated values along Georgia and Florida. Aerosol could be seen across the western and central Gulf of Mexico. At least some of this aerosol seems to be smoke from Mexican oil rigs in the southwestern Gulf.
