Haze over the Mid-Atlantic and Remnant Smoke over Canada

Today's MODIS Aqua AOD retrieval shows high aerosol load over the eastern seaboard of the US and extends into the Atlantic. This AOD is associated with the current air quality episode over the Mid-Atlantic, where PM2.5 concentration s reached Moderate AQI levels (EPA Airnow P2.5 AQI animation). The heat and the humid air mass over the region promoted their formation. The PM2.5 animation shows that Code Purple to Red PM2.5 AQI levels were reached during the early morning hours in California. PM2.5 concentrations from the California air quality stations (data from Airnowtech), Lone Pine Pauite/Shoshone Tribe and Keeler, reached concentrations that ranged from 100-380 ug/m3.

NOAA HMS reported the presence of smoke in Canada from numerous wildfires to the north and south of the Great Slave Lake. The fires are generating significant amounts of moderately dense to dense smoke, yielding high AOD values in today's satellite retrievals.
