Elevated PM 2.5 over Rocky Mountain States

Code Yellow (Moderate) levels of PM 2.5 were seen today in the Great Lakes region and the Pacific Southwest (AirNow, left). Codes Orange and Red (Unsafe for Sensitive Groups and Unhealthy, respectively) were also seen in the Rocky Mountain States. These elevated levels of PM 2.5 seem to have not been caused by smoke, as smoke was mostly only seen in Florida (HMS, right).

During the winter, elevated PM2.5 with no visible smoke from satellite is usually due to air stagnation and residential wood combustion. Here is a nice air stagnation forecast graphic that may be of interest for these events: http://www.intellicast.com/Health/Air.aspx
