PM 2.5 spike in Mid Rocky Mountain States

Air quality today was not too bad, but there were a good amount of Code Yellow (Moderate) levels of PM 2.5 seen in different parts of the nation, such as in the Southeast, the Pacific Southwest, the Northern Plains States, and the Rocky Mountain States (AirNow, top left). There were also up to Code Purple (Very Unhealthy) levels in the Rocky Mountain States. However, this elevated PM 2.5 is not due to smoke or sulfate coverage, as most smoke seen in the US was in either the South or the North (NOAA, top right), and sulfate coverage was mostly concentrated towards the Southeast (NRL, bottom left). There were also no fires in this area, so it was most likely not due to smoke.
