Happy Fourth of July! PM 2.5 levels rise

There was a good amount of Code Yellow (Moderate) PM 2.5 seen across the nation today, with Code Yellow being seen in the Plains States, the Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, the northern Rocky Mountain States, and the Pacific Southwest (AirNow, top left). There was also some Code Orange(Unsafe for Sensitive Groups) seen in Iowa and California. The elevated PM 2.5 seen around California were most likely due to smoke coming from ongoing wildfires in the Pacific Southwest region. The smoke has been mapped out in NOAA's HMS map, bottom left.

Ozone levels were also relatively high, with Code Yellow appearing in the Pacific Southwest, the Rocky Mountains States, and the Pacific Northwest(AirNow, bottom left). There was also Code Orange and Code Red (Unsafe) seen in California and Utah. These levels of ozone were most likely due to high temperatures seen in this region, with max temperatures ranging from nineties to the hundreds in this area (weather.gov, bottom right).
