Canadian Fires and Dense Smoke

Today we observed a relatively clear day. There is an onset of smoke and wildfires barreling in from Canada as thousands evacuate due to a multitude of fires. This highlights the beginning of the fire season in Oregon with 273 fires reported statewide (Oregon Department of Forestry). Fires north of the Canadian border has produced light to dangerous amounts of smoke that has travelled south into the Plain States region (HMS, top left), which contributed to the elevated AOD. However, heavy cloud coverage has blocked measurements of the AOD concentrations to satellites (EOSDIS, top right). In the VIIRS CONUS image below (bottom), AOD was light to moderately dense in the Pacific Southwest region of the nation and as temperatures stayed high and winds maintained a relatively low speed, ozone was allowed to accumulate and reach moderate concentrations in the region.
