Elevated AOD in the Pacific Northwest

Today we observed heavy concentrations of PM and ozone in the Pacific Southwest and Pacific Northwest regions of the states. In the HMS image below (top left), we see a multitude of fires along the southern provinces of Canada where the smoke is most dense in British Columbia and eastern Alberta. Fires in the Pacific Southwest region, Idaho and parts of Montana, in conjunction with the fires in Canada, were responsible for the presence of smoke in the Northern Plains states region. In the EOSDIS image below (top right), there were elevated levels of AOD in the Pacific Northwest and Southwest regions. Ozone was prevalent in the Pacific Southwest region, reaching concentration levels of low to unhealthy for sensitive groups as seen in the AirNow image below (bottom left). It is believed that high temperatures in the 100's had been a key factor to the elevated ozone in this region (NOAA, bottom right).
